EJ&T: Exodus 23:6-19: The poor, bribes, feasts, sacrificial fat, and boiling goats

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. Don't deny justice to the poor.
  2. Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. Exodus 23:6

  3. Don't make false accusations.
  4. Keep thee far from a false matter. Exodus 23:7a

  5. Don't kill innocent or righteous people.
  6. The innocent and righteous slay thou not. Exodus 23:7

Shed not innocent blood. Jeremiah 7:6

  7. Don't accept a bribe.
  8. Thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous. Exodus 23:8

Woe unto them that ... justify the wicked for reward. Isaiah 5:22-23

  9. Every seventh year do not plant or harvest any crops.
  10. Six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. Exodus 23:10-11

When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the Lord. Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land. And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee. And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat. Leviticus 25:2-7

Don't worry about what you'll eat on the seventh year when you plant no crops. If you ask God nicely, he'll make sure your sixth year crop will be enough for the next three years.
And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store. Leviticus 25:20-22

  11. Don't mention the names of any of the other gods.
  12. Make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth. Exodus 23:13

Neither make mention of the name of their gods. Joshua 23:7

  13. Celebrate three feasts during the year: unleavened bread, the first harvest, and the last harvest.
  14. Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field. Exodus 23:14-16

Each year you must celebrate three festivals in my honor. First, celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. No one may appear before me without an offering. Second, celebrate the Festival of Harvest, when you bring me the first crops of your harvest. “Finally, celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season, when you have harvested all the crops from your fields. Exodus 23:14-16, New Living Translation

The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib. Exodus 34:18

Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end. Exodus 34:22

Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the Lord thy God: for in the month of Abib the Lord thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the passover unto the Lord thy God, of the flock and the herd, in the place which the Lord shall choose to place his name there. Thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith, even the bread of affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life. And there shall be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning. Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee: But at the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt. And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents. Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work therein. Deuteronomy 16:1-8

  15. Three times a year every male must appear before God.
  16. Three items in the year all thy males shall appear before the LORD God. Exodus 23:17

Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel. Exodus 34:23

Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee. 19. Don't let any of the fat of God's sacrifice remain until the next morning.
  20. Neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning. Exodus 23:18b

Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. Exodus 34:25b

If ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD ... It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire. And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted. Leviticus 19:5-7

  21. Bring your first harvest to the house of the Lord.
  22. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Exodus 23:19a

  23. Don't boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

Now suppose someone leaves a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal with a neighbor for safekeeping, but it dies or is injured or gets away, and no one sees what happened. The neighbor must then take an oath in the presence of the LORD. If the LORD confirms that the neighbor did not steal the property, the owner must accept the verdict, and no payment will be required. Every Jot and Tittle: Ex 21:26-36: Slave's eyes, open pits, and stoned oxen

  1. If a man hits his slave and causes the slave to lose sight in one eye, he shall set the slave free.

  8. If the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. Exodus 21:29-31
However, the dead person’s relatives may accept payment to compensate for the loss of life. The owner of the ox may redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded. The same regulation applies if the ox gores a boy or a girl. New Living Translation

(The execution may be waved if the gored person's relatives would prefer to be paid money rather than see the negligent owner be executed.)

  9. If an ox kills a slave, the owner of the ox shall give the owner of the dead slave thirty shekels of silver and the ox shall be stoned.

Every Jot and Tittle: Exodus 21:15- 25: Unruly children, fist fights, beating slaves, and mischievous miscarriages

  1. If a person is killed unintentionally because God delivered the victim into the killer's hands, then God will find a place for the killer to hide.
  2. If a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. Exodus 21:13

  3. If you strike your father or mother, you shall be killed.
  4. He that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. Exodus 21:15

  5. Whoever kidnaps a person with the intention of selling that person as a slave shall be killed.
  6. He that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. Exodus 21:16

  7. If you curse your father or mother, you shall be killed.
  8. He that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. Exodus 21:17
For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him. Leviticus 20:9

For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Matthew 15:4-6

  9. If two men fight and one is injured, the man who caused the injury shall pay for the injured man's lost time.
  10. If men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed: If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. Exodus 21:18-19
Now suppose two men quarrel, and one hits the other with a stone or fist, and the injured person does not die but is confined to bed. Every Jot and Tittle: A list of all the Bible's commandments

Here is a list of the commandments that I've found so far. I'll keep adding as I go along.

  1. Be fruitful and multiply.
  2. God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply. Genesis 1:28a, 9:1, 9:7, 35:11
This command is given repeatedly by God, and although it may have been meant only for the particular people that God was talking to at the time (Adam and Eve, Noah and his shipmates, and Jacob), many Bible believers consider it a direct command to all humankind. So, for the sake of completeness, I'll include it on the list.

  3. Subdue the earth and have dominion over every living thing.
  4. Replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28b
the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Genesis 9:2

  5. Don't eat blood.
  6. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. Genesis 9:4
It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood. Leviticus 3:17
Ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people. Leviticus 7:26-27
And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. ... No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. ... Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off. Leviticus 17:10-14
But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. ... For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood.... Acts 15:20, 28-29

  7. Whoever kills another person must be killed.
  8. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. Genesis 9:6
He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. Exodus 21:12
If a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. Exodus 21:14
Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. Numbers 35:30

  9. Baby boys must be circumcised eight days after their birth.
  10. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. Genesis 17:10-14
And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. Leviticus 12:3

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. Exodus 12:3-6

  15. After killing the lamb, smear some of its blood on the sides and top of your door post.

  21. Eat all of it. Don't leave any until the morning. Burn the leftovers.

  31. The feast of unleavened bread shall be observed forever.
  32. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses. Exodus 12:17-19
There is some disagreement about the details, though. (See How many days is unleavened bread to be eaten during the Passover?)

    • Make a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered coat, a miter, and a girdle.
    • Make the ephod out of gold, with cunningly embroidered blue, purple, and scarlet-colored fine linen. Join the shoulder pieces together at the edges.
    • Make the curious girdle of the ephod out of the same materials that you used when making the ephod.
    • Engrave the names of Israel's (Jacob's) first six sons on one of the onyx stones (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, and Naphtali), and the name of the last six sons on the other stone (Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin). Attach these stones to gold chains and place them on the shoulders of the ephod.
    • Make the breastplate of judgment as cunningly as you made the ephod and out of the same materials. It shall be square in shape, 22 cm on a side. Embed four rows of stones. The first row shall have a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle. In the second use an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. The third row shall have an ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. The last row shall have a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper. Set each of these rows in gold and write the names of Jacob's sons on them. Attach some gold chains to gold rings on the breastplate and fasten the whole mess onto the curious girdle of the ephod.
    • Put the Urim and the Thummim on the breastplate of judgment.
    • Make a blue robe of the ephod with a hole in the top. Reinforce the hole so it won't rip. Below the hem of the robe attach some blue pomegranates and golden bells. Do this so that God will hear Aaron coming. (Without the bell God wouldn't hear him coming and would kill him.)
    • Make a gold plate and engrave "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" on it. Put the plate on some blue lace and attach it to the miter that is on Aaron's head. This plate much stay on Aaron's forehead forever.
    • Embroider the coat of fine linen, make the miter of fine linen, and the girdle of needlework.
    • Make some coats, girdles, and bonnets for Aaron's sons for glory and beauty. And make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness from their loins down to their thighs. Make sure Aaron and his sons where these holy breeches when they enter the tabernacle or God will kill them.
    • All of these instructions are a commandment from God forever.

Thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty. ... These are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.

And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work. It shall have the two shoulderpieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof; and so it shall be joined together.

And the curious girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and grave on them the names of the children of Israel: Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth. With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel: thou shalt make them to be set in ouches of gold. And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial. And thou shalt make ouches of gold; And two chains of pure gold at the ends; of wreathen work shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathen chains to the ouches.

And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt thou make it. Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof. And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row. And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings. And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes. And thou shalt make upon the breastplate chains at the ends of wreathen work of pure gold. And thou shalt make upon the breastplate two rings of gold, and shalt put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. And thou shalt put the two wreathen chains of gold in the two rings which are on the ends of the breastplate. And the other two ends of the two wreathen chains thou shalt fasten in the two ouches, and put them on the shoulderpieces of the ephod before it. And thou shalt make two rings of gold, and thou shalt put them upon the two ends of the breastplate in the border thereof, which is in the side of the ephod inward. And two other rings of gold thou shalt make, and shalt put them on the two sides of the ephod underneath, toward the forepart thereof, over against the other coupling thereof, above the curious girdle of the ephod. And they shall bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be above the curious girdle of the ephod, and that the breastplate be not loosed from the ephod.

And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually. And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.

And thou shalt make the robe of the ephod all of blue. And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent. And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about: A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about. And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the LORD, and when he cometh out, that he die not.

And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and grave upon it, like the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD. And thou shalt put it on a blue lace, that it may be upon the mitre; upon the forefront of the mitre it shall be. And it shall be upon Aaron's forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.

And thou shalt embroider the coat of fine linen, and thou shalt make the mitre of fine linen, and thou shalt make the girdle of needlework.

And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty. And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach: And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die:
